My mustache shines so bright I need shades to block its radiance!
a poem by nathan

I follow my mustache wherever it goes
And where it will lead me nobody knows

Up to the corner store to get me some beer
My mustache speaks up for all to hear.

On the rights of the human, for water and food
And the right to good health, I aint jokin dude.

All of my life I have looked up to those before me
Who have grown great mustaches for more than a century

Frank Zappa, Mister Poe, Frida Kahlo and more,
All these people with furry-lips, there lives were no bore

So heed the words of my mustache so bright
And make a donation in the name of human rights

You will not be sorry, of this I can swear.
For the rights of human beings we all must declare.

So go to this blog, and click on the link
And donate today before you even wink

Stephen Kuhn: Weeks 2,3, 4 & 5

Stephen Kuhn
Weeks 2,3,4 & 5

My name is Stephen Kuhn. I am 24 years old and in my last semester at SFSU. I feel that human rights are have an impact on me because, well I am a human being. I strongly believe that our society as a whole needs to do a better job of creating a sense of community. I have been growing a mustache for as long as I can remember so this seems like a perfect fit!!

Phil Klasky week one

As a lecturer in the Department of American Indian Studies and the College of Ethnic Studies, and as an activist working for social and environmental justice, I am well aware of the challenges facing indigenous peoples around the world. Due to ravages of colonialism and the constant attack on native lands by corporations and governments, orginal peoples have been forced off of their lands and marginalized within a system that favors profit over people and sustainability. There is a direct correlation between cultural and environmental diversity and as a cultural ethnographer I work to help preserve and revitalize native knowledge and traditions that help protect the earth -- teachings we can all learn from.
If growing a soul patch will help fundraise for human rights, then I am happy to help out. Contribute to our movement and watch it grow!

"My mustache is finally becoming visible. This was to be expected though, because it is slow-grown on nothing but love. However once it takes root, there is no stopping it's destiny, protecting human rights."

I always thought Mustache Competitions were somewhat superficial.
However, now I can proudly grow my mustache without being embarassed
AND its for a good cause! My role model is Yosemite Sam, and my
favorite band is Moustach (http://www.myspace.com/mustasch).

As an exhange student from the Peace Department in Bradford, UK it is
fantastic that I can combine my passion for lipfur with my interest in
human rights, peace and development!

If there is anyone out there who has any beauty-stache tips, I’m very
interested! Currently, I’m using Regain to boost my hair growth,
taking extra vitamins and my morning ritual is to put some conditioner
on for 5 minutes to make it shiny and smooth.

I’m excited to meet other mustache growers and human rights fighters
at the Human Rights Summit in May.

I would also like to thank Josefin Benjaminsson for being supportive
and for helping me out with the trimming.

Kellen Prandini
Week 2
Here's a little info about me and my connection to the summit:
I am a visual anthropology graduate student at SFSU and am very happy to be growing a mustache in support of the Human Rights Summit this year! I have been involved in the past two summits and am looking forward to this year's topic: health and education equity. The summit is a great way to get students, faculty, and community members to come together and not only discuss human rights issues, but also actively work toward making differences in our communities now.

Nathan's Bio:

Nathan has been an avid grower of facial hair from an early age. He started with the well known goatee, but soon moved on to more progressive forms of ornimentation such as the mountain man beard, and later the handlebar mustache. Nathan has participated in various mustache competitions throughout the United States, but this particular mustache-a-thon is closer to his heart.
In his own words:
"Having participated in the Human Rights Summit during my undergraduate studies at San Francisco State University, I know that it is one of the most important events produced every year. Important for the broader community and for the students who not only get the valuable experience of planning and producing an academic conference, but get to read their own works in a public forum. This is unheard of in most undergraduate institutions, and in the current financial climate we need to band together in order to make sure that conferences such as this stay alive. Im wearing my mustache proudly, and I hope that you can find it in your heart to give a few dollars for a great cause!"
